Coaches Blog: WBL Round 2 – The Results

Article and Photos by RCC Coaches Danny Haynes

WBL Round 2 (3)With 6pm arriving sooner than foreseen, the Round 2 Winter Bouldering League was on, with competitors keen to bring their A game… With La Sportiva and Petzl, (courtesy of Lyon Equipment) on hand, casing boot demos and equipment demonstrations the night was set to be a cracker.

The night kicked off with competitors eagerly walking round the blocs, looking for those all important flash attempts. The easier grades were looking to be very droppable, so the categories were in for a slight mix up; Yann and Evie had brought a unique style this round with a well rounded set of problems. Throughout the evening we saw great attempts on the funkier looking blocs, as well as some great encouragement/ heckling from the crowds!

Petzl Neil Gresham WBL R2 (2)

With the evening rounded off with a great demonstration from Neil Gresham and Roger from Lyon Equipment, on dynamic belaying, the route climbers got something out of the night as well!  A great evening all round and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

WBL Round 2 Results are now available here…..

Don’t forget Round 3 is now the 29th January 2015, so come on in and get training to keep the psyche through December - happy training everyone!

Thursday 30th October saw the return of our infamous La Sportiva Winter Bouldering League! Round 1 was set to be a great event with local boy, Rob Lloyd and new to RCC, Peak District legend, Ethan Walker setting! To spice things up even more, this year sees the introduction of our new junior and senior categories. This year the juniors have the standard male and female split along with the newly introduced 7-11 and 12-15 years of age category! For the seniors, we have removed the veterans category, but keeping the male/female split introducing our new VB-V4 and V5-V8+. For the first year at RCC there really is all to play for, for all competitors!

So Round 1… well you didn’t let us down, it was a huge success, in fact it was our busiest round to date! With nearly 100 competitors combined, the 30th Oct saw some incredible efforts, sends and wacky beta being laid down! For full results of Round 1, click here….

Next on the agenda, WBL Round 2 on Thursday 27th Nov & Petzl Lead Climbing Championship returns Saturday 22th Nov

What’s next, Round 2… how are you preparing?

Well we won’t disappoint! Round 2 not only has some top class setters, but also has teamed up some mega legendary brands to give everybody, even non competitors, a night to remember.

Problem Solving

Academy Member Tom working on his route reading with Coach Will

We are psyched to announce we have the French finesse of Yann Genoux making his WBL return, and to give a bit of girl power, Evie Cotrulia makes here RCC debut!

With round 2 not too far off, and newly set Pink V2-V4. Blue V6-V8+, Yellow VB-V8+ and Black VB-V6 circuit, now is the perfect time to work on your on-sight climbing, problem solving and general technique!

Over the last few months, our coaches have been hard at work helping the Academy team prepare for not only the RCC Winter Bouldering League, but also for national competitions such as the Welsh Opens, this November and the Winter Open later this year.

Want to know how our team of coaches can help improve your competition and general climbing, drop us an email to coaching@readingclimbingcentre.com.

Coaches competition tip:

When the comp starts, take your score card and look at every bloc. Mark each bloc a score out of 1-3. 1 being very doable, your looking at a 95% chance of doing first go, 2 being should do but may need to work, 3 being, well you get the idea. Then climb the blocs in order. This then means you ensure early on you get those important points in the blocs marked 1, plus you can spend crucial time and energy working blocs you feel confident on, thus hopefully gaining you a better score. Any time left, that’s your time to play on those bloc marked 3. Any blocs your not sure on, try them early on, you may be surprised, they may not be that hard, an even a bonus hold is worth 1 point :-)

We are also excited to announce that not only does the 27th Nov bring you round 2 of the Winter Bouldering League, but also brings the first ever RCC Lyon Equipment Winter Wall Event, with La Sportiva boot demo, along with Petzl ‘Ask the Experts’ gear advice! 27th Nov, get it in your diaries people!!!
