WBL Round 4 – The Results

WBL Round 3

Well we say it every time but what a great night last was!!! The setters had created some awesome blocs, riddled with techy starts, burly cruxes and heart breaking last moves, but boy you did not disappoint!

From the start it was set to be a battle to the end for who would get those all important points, new beta the setters hadn’t even thought of being thrown out right from the 6pm kick off.

With Round 4 over that means one thing, next on the agenda, The Final! This is to be an amazing all day event and will not only feature the standard 30 comp blocs all worth double points, but we will also hoist our first ever WBL on the night Final for the top competitors to fight it out over who will gain the podium positions for 2015!

More details of the final will be announced early next month plus exciting news for our boulder wall circuits! Saturday 28th March 2015, save the date….

Coaches Blog: La Sportiva WBL Round 3 – The Results

With Thursday 29th Feb coming round quicker than expected, the day started early with the route setters creating some of the best blocs we have seen! Our normal host setter Rob Lloyd was on hand to provide a whole host of dynamic blocs, with our “guest” setter Tom Vaessen working alongside!

With the blocs set and tested it was then the count down until 6pm for the comp to kick off, with competitors arriving early to walk round the bouldering area, scoping out beta! The comp kicked off in style with a few early droppers on some of the more interesting easier blocs, however through the evening the familiar crowd showed up, putting in some stern efforts on the mix of harder moves. Andrew Flemming was also on hand to take a few action shots. Before long the evening was drawing to a close, not before a few heckles and cheers to support the field, with 9.30pm drawing closer it was a scramble to get those last important points on the remaining blocs.

A great evening all round, with good tunes, great atmosphere and the all important good blocs. See you at Round 4; Thursday 26th Feb, expect things to be mixed up…

Thanks to Andrew Fleming for the great shot, all other Round 3 shots from Andy can be seen here…

Coaches Blog: 2014, What a Year! What will 2015 bring?

Written by Danny Haynes – RCC CoachPetzl Neil Gresham WBL R2 (2)

With 2015 creeping in, and 2014 seeming like it was yesterday here at Reading Climbing Centre we have sprinted off the start line. Route setting has kept you all on your toes (excuse the coaching pun) over the Holiday period with over 100 new blocs in our newly designed boulder wall and more than 25 routes to go at. Off the backside of this coaching sessions here have gone through the roof, with 1:1’s being the order of the day along side our academy squad nights and our new open academy helping develop young talent from our NICAS & NIBAS programmes. Week nights seem to be ever increasing in popularity, with social nights adding to the mix of good music, great atmosphere and the occasional high pitched scream. Gear demos have also been a regular occurrence with the first Lyon Winter Wall Event with guest stars including Neil Gresham!

OWBL Round 2 (3)ur monthly Winter Bouldering League has come round again with Round 3 on Thursday 29th January, ensure you get down from 6pm for an evening of funky shapes and numerous apes swinging around. Alongside W.B.L this month we will be holding the first round of the BMC Youth Climbing Series (London and South East, North Region), a nationally recognised competition for kids aged from 7 – 17 with kicking off Saturday 24th Jan 2015: the perfect place to start your kids competition climbing career. This is sure to be poplar amongst the younger generation of climbers that are up and coming through the ranks, and one not to be missed even if you thought climbing wasn’t a spectator sport.

15911482342_1fc1f6cdaa_zAlongside all of these events the Academy is back to training mode, with a lot of the RCC staff following in their footsteps! If your keen to hop on the training train, then get in contact with us here at Reading Climbing Centre through January for our Get Fit Campaign and receive 20% off coaching sessions. 2014 saw RCC Academy Veteran (at 15!) Catrin Rose retaining her place in the GB Junior Lead Climbing Team, plus a whole host Academy Podiums in comps from the Welsh Open, British Lead Climbing Championships, Youth Lead Cup and our own WBL and Petzl Lead comps. Oh and not forgetting our guest Coaches James Pearson and Caroline Ciavaldini.

photoElliott our in house setter, coach and all round nice guy managed to redpoint his first ever 8a down at Cheddar Gorge. Top efforts all round I must add.

Our open academy has started up, with great turn outs on both Wednesday and Friday night. These are the up and coming kids to keep an eye out for when on a rope as they have undiscovered talent! Not forgetting our fresh out of the box NIBAS scheme is now up and running, with some great feedback from the kids so far, even the instructors seem to be getting something out of it.

So that’s 2015 so far with our ever growing sport going from strength to strength here at Reading Climbing Centre, we are all climbers so come have a chat if you ever need anything, and if you haven’t checkout our new Boulder wall or Comp wall get down soon!
