Climb Skills & Lead Skills Courses

Climbing Skills Course & Lead Climbing Skills Course

We’re pleased to announce a new set of climbing skills courses to help you progress your climbing.

Following feedback from our Beginners’ Climbing Course customers, as well as those joining us having learned to climb or boulder elsewhere, is that following those initial lessons, climbers are largely left to fend for themselves in terms of improving their climbing technique, well not any more!

We are pleased to introduce two new courses available at Reading Climbing Centre, Climb Skills Course and Lead Skills Course.

Climb Skills builds on all the safety and technique knowledge taught in the Beginners’ Climbing Course, but focuses entirely on your climbing technique. Running in the same format as the Beginners’ Course, Climb Skills teaches a host of practical technique and movement skills over three 2 hour sessions, including:

  • Footwork
  • Correct use of climbing holds
  • Body positioning & specific movement techniques
  • Advanced movement techniques
  • Climbing efficiently

The first Climb Skills courses are scheduled to run in March, and are available to book now! Courses cost £100 per person, running over three consecutive weeks.

Lead Skills builds on our already popular Learn to Lead course, but fulfilling the same function as Climb Skills, to teach the more advanced skills and techniques which will allow you to progress faster and develop better technique from the outset.

Running over two sessions, the course consolidates your learning ensuring you leave with genuinely usable lead climbing skills and techniques you will apply each and every time you get in the wall.

Lead Skills courses are available to book at times to suit you, and cost £150 for two people or £225 for three. Please contact us for more information!

The Climbing Centre Group is proud to welcome Team GB coach Ian Dunn on board as our head climbing coach.  Working across at the Manchester, Harrogate and Reading Climbing Centres, Ian will plan and implement training courses, and oversee their development and delivery by our staff.

With over 40 years of climbing under his belt, and years of experience coaching team GB’s junior members, Ian is ideally placed to support Climbing Centres Group (CCG) staff in delivering targeted coaching to our customers.

Ian Dunn Climbing CoachIan and CCG staff will work closely together to design training plans suitable for all standards and ages of climber – whether you’re chasing your first 5+, or pushing 8a, there’ll be a plan in place to help you progress.  As well as providing training plans for customers to work from, Ian will be available for personal coaching sessions if you need a more hands-on approach.

Ian is currently Team Coach for the GB junior team; 2013 has seen Team GB achieve their best ever results, so Ian’s training plans are certainly working!

With a climbing career spanning the globe, including over 100 first ascents in the UK, Ian has the experience to back up his coaching.  He climbed his first 8a back in 1989, and considers Revelations (8b) at Raven Tor to be his hardest ascent. Ian is still training and climbing hard today.

From 1983-86, Ian was the British Mountaineering Council’s Technical Officer, and has served a number of BMC specialist committees for many years. As a member of the Training and Youth Committee, he was instrumental in establishing the BMC’s National and Regional Academies for talented young climbers. He is also a provider of the BMC’s FUNdamentals of Climbing and Physical Training Workshops and is a provider of the Mountain Training Coaching Awards.

Ian was also on the working group of The Association of British Climbing Walls that established the National Indoor Climbing Accreditation Scheme (NICAS) a five level structure for teaching climbing skills.

Extremely passionate about coaching, Ian loves to see all climbers both young and old achieving their full potential.
